WISALA owners have been able to become financially powerful through support from donors large and small.
In 2024, 25 widow groups in Meru County launched their WISALAs supported by a grant from the UNFCU Foundation and the IF! Foundation. Partnerships such as this make our work possible. With renewed funding for 2025, we look forward to continuing to support these incredible women as they strengthen their economic power and exercise their human rights.
Through this partnership, we’ve been able to provide the groups with the essential tools, including strong boxes and legal registration, and skills development: financial and legal literacy, business management and entrepreneurial skills.
With GFW’s 2:1 capitalisation, these groups have expanded or started businesses such as farming, animal rearing, kiosks and even a traditional dance company.
These widows have also become community paralegals. They completed courses in areas such as Kenya's constitution, gender equality and laws regarding land ownership, child marriage and succession.
